Project Simplify – Week 1

Project Simplify: Week 1 | www.dizana.com

Courtney Carver

I shared in my New Year’s post that I intend to devote part of my focus this year to simplifying. For me, that’s a pretty broad intention. It all boils down to this quote by William Morris:

Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

So that is my goal for this year, to either remove everything that isn’t either useful or beautiful or to make it useful or beautiful. I envision each week will be slightly different. Some weeks I may have something insightful to share, other weeks it may just be photos of what I removed. Either way, the intention is to spend at least part of each week simplifying.

At the first of the year, I am always inspired to begin removing clutter so I can begin with a fresh slate. Here are a few things I’ve been working on this first week of 2015:

  • Take down and put away all the holiday decorations
  • Become aware of things piling up on flat surfaces
  • Clear flat surfaces of things I don’t use regularly. For me this is usually removing appliances from the kitchen counter. If I use the appliance daily, it can stay; otherwise, it needs to find a home in a cabinet.
  • Take note of the things I’ve been stockpiling. Am I using them? If not, stop buying them and donate or give away what I’ve compiled.
  • Take note of all the things that come in via email or snail mail. Do I want these? If not, unsubscribe – figure out a way to make it stop.
  • Clear off my desk.
  • Do a deep clean of the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Replace air filters and any other similar items that are to be replaced frequently but I don’t remember the last time they were.

How can you simplify your life?
